intro
Effects-laden epic-sounding second single from London based band the Early Years, which promises well for their forthcoming debut album
London based the Early Years release their second single on Beggars Banquet records, ‘So Far Gone’, an effects-laden piece of pop wonderment guaranteed to get your foot tapping. Influences would seem to be Can, Mogwai and other purveyors of the epic pop song. They have a sound similar to Secret Machines, particularly in the building climax, but with all that pretentiousness scraped off. The single’s B-sides are equally as good. ‘Rats’ is, for the most part, a much more gentle affair; a shoe-gazing number with a great vocal line over gentle buzzing guitar and barely-there drums. In the last two minutes, the song builds into a wall of psychedelic noise; feedback, effects and drums all layered up to great effect. The other B side, ‘So Far Gone part II’, starts off as jerky burst of guitar over a gentle effects hum, but explodes into a power-drum charged instrumental gem for a final push of brilliant energy. This single will definitely have people begging for a full-length record in the very near future.
