intro

Uplifting new single from late 90's geek rockers Silver Sun, who on the comeback trial prove they have not lost their knack with a killer melody

In a year when Weezer totally failed to deliver an album anybody wanted, the geek rock genre is looking dead. But, no, hold the press. Silver Sun are back! In their earlier years, they were deemed too silly for the ‘serious’ music market (though they did get a 5 star review in 'Kerrang!' once) and too rocky for 'Smash Hits' (this was in the days before Blink 182 had hits). Their label dropped them after their second album, 'Neon Wave', wasn’t a smash. I nearly cried. But this year, a new album - which has been in the works for years - finally arrived in record shops. Sadly, nobody but their old fans seems to have noticed. Their loss. Silver Sun rule! 'Immediate' is the second single from this new album. The keyboard driven introduction sounds a little off putting at first, but as soon as the awesome falsetto harmonies start, I’m bopping like it’s 1998! The first B-Side, 'Dance With Me', is just as good, with uptempo drums and unselfconsciously "cheesy" guitars pushed right to the top of the mix, and more of those killer harmonies. 'Sweet Baby' is more of the same, and perhaps the most uplifting of the three. Okay, there is nothing profound here, and no tune to rival their audacious big hit 'Lava'. But, never mind, its still nice to know James Broad, the band’s singer, hasn’t lost his sense of fun or his knack with a killer melody. Perhaps he should write songs for the winner of X Factor! Play this LOUD!
