intro
Dan Cressey examines raucous American blues-rockers the Black Keys new DVD which was recorded live in Sydney in Australia
Recorded in Sydney, Australia, this new release from American blues-rockers the Black Keys finds them on their usual form. The Keys have always impressed live and this DVD is no different. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney steam through their solid blues numbers, blasting out their hits ‘Set You Free’, ’10 AM Automatic’, other tracks from their albums and covers including Iggy and the Stooges’ ‘No Fun’. The music is, as would be expected from anyone familiar with this band, quality, but the pictures don’t really come close to matching the music. They are not bad. The quality is fine. There are enough angles to maintain interest and even view choice of shots on one song. The problem stems from the fact that this band is about the music. Auerbach is a fine frontman and he belts out his vocals with aplomb but there isn’t actually anything that interesting going on on stage apart from the music. Listening to this is truly a pleasure and if you’ve got the time watching it is a good way of killing time till they decide to grace our shores again. You don’t loose much if you shut your eyes though. Okay, it might not set any new benchmarks for music DVDs but this should tide fans over till the next album from Auerbach and Carney.

Pearshaped (2001) |
Although singer songwriters often find themselves propping up images of hippy ideals and thick knit jumpers, this is not so much a folk album, but more an exercise in stripping things back to there |
