intro
Excellent compilation on the Temporary Residence label with experimental rock, folk and electro acts reinterpreting Ozzy-era Black Sabbath songs
Here’s some advice for you. If you’re ever stopped on a busy street and questioned by annoying born again Christians and they ask do you observe the Sabbath, reply, yes seen them at Ozzfest, then walk away. When I was sent this CD I was a bit apprehensive at first. I mean Apocalyptica have reworked metal with classical music ok, but Black Sabbath reworked as folk? Safe to say this is a brilliant compilation, as there are some interesting interpretations on it. First up, there are experimental artists, Matmos, with an electronic noise version of instrumental, 'FX', strangely sounding like something from the 'Forbidden' soundtrack. While Japanese noise merchants, Ruins, offer a medley of Sabbath's best songs, sounding like something you’d hear in a music shop, no stairway, of course. Instrumental band, Grail, add a lighter side to the sinister 'Black Sabbath', while post rock artist, Four Tet, reworks Beavis and Butthead favourite, 'Iron Man', brilliantly. Perhaps the best interpretation on here is the Curtis Harvey Trio with 'Changes', which really does the classic lighter in the air song justice and make it their own. Sadly, Ozzy won’t be remembered for being in Black Sabbath, instead he’ll be that guy who swore, had a stammer and was on that crappy TV show, 'The Osbournes'.
