intro
Disappointing and banal collection of torch songs from former 'Creem' journalist and member of the 70's CBGB's scene Lauren Agnelli
American Lauren Agnelli is something of a chameleon. In the 70's she wrote for 'Creem' under the alias of Trixie A Balm and was wrapped up in the whole CBGB's scene with the largely-forgotten Nervus Rex. Then in 1983 she turned her attention to the then blossoming folk-rock revival with the band Washington Squares, which adopted every possible cliche of Beatnik (as opposed to Beat) culture going - berets, goaties and stripped shirts - like cool, daddy-o. Unfortunately, any great understanding of the Beats was sadly missing. Then when that phase passed she teamed up with Dave Rave and one time Television drummer Billy Ficca and reached the heights of touring Russia and making it into Japan's Top 100 chart. Nowadays she can apparently be found as an after hours chanteuse in Manhattan clubs. No doubt delivering up the standard repetoire of torch songs detailing heartache and loneliness - hey, even Kurt Weill's 'September Song' makes it onto her latest album - but is largely ignored by the audience as they clink glasses and chat amongst themselves. 'Love Always Follows Me' sees Agnelli dreaming of being some sort of cross between the gutsy Marianne Faithfull, Francoise Hardy's femininity and the Germanic coldness of Nico but, unfortunately, she's not even close to being in the same league as any of them. Her debut solo album is full of banal cabaret songs that the likes of Agnes Bernelle would chuck away as being sub-standard. Cabaret invariably relies on the power of the vocalist to deliver the tales of woe while the musicians are just there to provide a musical backing. Unfortunately, Angelli simply doesn't have the voice to carry it off.
