intro
Compellingly eclectic totally instrumental new EP from Texas four-piece, whose four tracks "jump from catchy melodies to post-rock noise in seconds, before veering off again into entirely different direction"
Although this totally instrumental EP from Texas four-piece By The End of Tonight contains only four tracks it clocks in at just over 25 minutes. Most of this is, however, attributable to the ten minute closer ‘It’s Christmas Time Again’. The other tracks are a more traditional length but all are anything but traditional in structure. They jump from catchy melodies to post-rock noise in seconds, before veering off again into entirely different directions. If you were to listen to this while driving you would most likely crash. On a first listen this can sound slightly like a number of intros and outros from other songs strung together, but given time its a very compelling and technically impressive collection. Not something you would relax to for sure, but a perfect soundtrack for creeping through darkened city streets. This is a mean little CD and one that probably slows down and rubbernecks at car crashes. There are moments where it becomes almost tender but - except on the last track - they are quickly hidden beneath another sharp musical turn. The frequent changes don’t mean that the songs are disjointed. All four have a firm grasp of where they are going. It might not clear to the listener where they’re going to end up but it is fun finding out.
