intro

Catchy new single from Japanese trio the 5, 6,7,8's, which seems destined to rule the airwaves all summer

The 5,6,7,8’s catchy new single is destined to become one of those radio friendly tracks that you start by loving and end up hating due to sheer overplay. The concept is shockingly simple: take a tired old riff or two and repeat them while someone sings ‘woo hoo, woo hoo hoo’ over the top. It works though. Okay, it’s not going to win any prizes for breaking new musical ground, but it is a hell of a lot better than the tracks that normally get stuck on to beer commercials (in this case Carling’s football ad). The last time a ‘woo hoo’ was deployed in such an effective fashion would have to be Blur's ‘Song 2’. Flip side ‘Guitar Date’ is a competent if basic piece of surf-rock with incomprehensible Japanglish lyrics and it complements ‘Woo Hoo’ nicely. But both of the tracks on this single are drawn from the 5,6,7,8’s last album and the whole thing clocks in at under five minutes. Given that the band has been around for ages, with very little recognition, you can’t really hold it against them if they want to cash in on their new-found-fame but this isn’t exactly the year’s greatest bargain - you’re better off saving up for the album instead. By the time the summer is over you will have heard ‘Woo Hoo’ on the radio every five minutes. And on that Carling advert every time you turn on the TV. And probably blaring out of every branch of Gap you walk past. In other words by the end of the summer you are going to wish it had never been recorded. So quick: enjoy it while you can…
