intro
Disappointing 24 song tribute compilation album to the Teenage Fanclub, whose bands remain a little too close to their original source
Most of the time, I find tribute compilations quite annoying and meaningless. In most cases, the original versions of the songs are far superior to the cover recorded by an admiring band, and even though a cover version might be fun to listen to one or two times, it's not something that keeps spinning in your CD-player. Well, not in mine, at least !!! And this power-pop tribute to the great Scots band Teenage Fanclub is exactly one of those records. It's quite clear that most of these bands have TFC as their main heroes, as most of these bands sounds like them even when they write their own songs. This means that the cover versions presented here sounds exactly like Teenage Fanclub's recordings. What is the point of all this then? Well, I don't know, really. It's not that it's a bad record... most of the songs are pretty good and the recordings are well done, but when they don't bring anything original to their interpretations, you might as well get the TFC compilation that was released last year. The best thing about this album was that I was once again reminded of how good the TFC is/was when they're at their most beautiful, such as on the ' Grand Prix' album, for instance. Maybe other people listening to this will have the same feeling ...
