intro
Passionate and angry debut single from the already much acclaimed the Others, who prove capable of more than living up to the hype
Current NME darlings, the Others, finally commit themselves to CD and it's actually good stuff for once. Signed to Poptones which isn't always a good thing (Look at the Cosmic Rough Riders ! A great band who got nowhere), the Others are very young and passionate as are their fan base. A very limited 7 inch of this which was signed was also available, and sold out in its first week of release. The first track, 'This is for the Poor', opens with a great bass line that reminds me of very early R.E.M., and is followed by some aggresive jangly guitar. When Dominic Masters' vocals make their entrance they sound shambolic and have a very angry and pissed air of disgust at these times that we live in.Dominic has already become a new voice for his generation and his vocals are very 1977 in their delivery and anger, so it's no real surprise that he is already being described as today's answer to Joe Strummer. The second track 'How I Nearly Lost You' has a more focused tune. The vocals are not as sloppy and there is more to the song's story line. The last track on the CD is 'Almanac'. It starts off with a drum pattern that begins sounding like the Mighty Lemon Drops 'Happy Head' and then changes to sound like the Mary Chain's 'You Trip Me Up'. The bass kicks in in angry form making this one of the best records from a new band that I have heard in a long time.
