intro

Demanding, but rewarding " jazzy melancholy "on debut mini album from Japanese solo artist and recent Fat Cat signing, Chib

Eccentrics can draw a heavy toll on you. Chib's music is so affectionate by nature that, when you're not a woman yourself, nor at present with a woman, her 'Moco' album is more than music to your ears. 'Moco'-the translation to the word is in the bin with the press release (as always)-starts off with the sound pastiches I at least first heard on Sonic Youth's 'Providence'. The voice sample at the start will not be conclusive but, when it sounds like 'I have no idea', then like 'I have no alternative' and ultimately like 'I have no criminal', you can bet you're in for a whole session of exciting contemplation. Listening to Chib is no different from meeting with Japanese women whose basic command of the English language will always draw away your attention from words. I wish I still had that press release since 'Moco' is one of the very few words Chib mentions. Her music is a meditation with the aid of analog and digital samples. 'Moco' buzzes around yer head. This mini-album never fails to intrigue. File under 'esoteric eroticism'. Next to 'minimal composing and sampling'. 'Long' then is Chib's moment suprème and as the last track on the EP perhaps explains it all. Rather an aftermath than a fallout, listening to 'Moco' is no wasted time. It requires imagination and patience while it offers jazzy melancholy in a harmonic way.
