Third release from Guildford post-rock group and recent Pennyblackmusic Bands night stars, which proves to be their finest recording to date

Moly are a post-rock act from Guildford. The band have gone through many personnel changes, but their latest and best line-up consists of Richard Fennings, Greg Fooro, Mark Sharkey and Neil Sharkey. The ‘It Rained, But We Cheered’ EP is Moly’s third release and is their finest recording to date. This 4 track EP opens with the strong- focused ‘The Things I Could Do To You With A Coat Hanger’. The whole song reminds me of a dark storm with lots of flashing thunder. Streams of guitar and drums collaboratively join up and strengthen together into one stormy flow. Then the music erupts into thunder claps with its sharp and edgy sound. Half way through it seems that the music will calm down and drift away, but then it starts building up again and sweeping everything right off the surface. The second track ‘Cut Me Mick’ starts from a similar place.There is a beautiful contrast between the rough music which dominates at the start of it and slowly flows into the background, and the very soft sound of a bass guitar which slowly moves into the front line. Even though Moly are officially an instrumental band on ‘Sheep Mentality’ they do use vocals, but more in instrumental way. The whole song has a very dark and bleak character. Perhaps it doesn’t have a very pleasant sound, but it nevertheless gives a very realistic and visual impression. ‘Mild Heart Attack # 3’ gives the EP a very calm ending. It’s more like a fragile echo of the previous 3 tracks. ‘It Rained, But We Cheered’ is a very powerful and convincing EP. It sees the band revealing their inner potential with increasing confidence and exploring new styles with great conviction. It’s a real work of music art.
