intro
Pleasant enough, but thoroughly predictable 60's influenced rock from Danish trio, Baby Woodrose
The haircuts of these three say it all (check out the front cover). They make exactly the kind of music they look like they do. Heavy on hooks, light on lyrics. Opener ‘Honey Dripper’ is so 60’s I forgot it was 2003. Not a great opener, but the Rolling Stones-meets-The Who vibe of ‘Disconnected’ makes up for that. An excellent three chord riff is paired with Moon-esque drum fills and a great rock vocal. I still didn’t know what they were talking about though! The 60’s rock theme runs throughout the record: Baby Woodrose do the Kinks on ‘Pouring Water’; the Animals on ‘Hippie Chick’; Hendrix on ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’; even Manfredd Mann on the title track. That’s not to say this is a bad album – there are far worse influences to have than those acts mentioned. And there are two absolute gems in there – ‘You Better Run’, a Move-a-like rocker with incredible vocals, and ‘Carrie’, an eerie ballad reminiscent of the Super Furries. There’s not a great deal of depth to this music – making it very difficult to write about. But for a quick fix of 60's rock and roll, Baby Woodrose do just as good a job as The Hives. Just watch out for those haircuts, they can’t be healthy.
