intro
Run-of-the mill "hardcore by numbers" from new group on the Welcoming Commitee label
In their bio, Che cite Refused as a big influence. Don't, however expect anything like the Swedish hardcore legend's excellent 'The Shape of Punk to Come', Che have a more traditional hardcore sound. Their female vocalist Meegan Riot does add quite a distinctive melodic sound, but apart from that, this is nothing here that bands like Sick of It All or the Deftones haven't donebefore. The opening riff to 'Path of Least Resistance' could have slotted in seamlessly with the tracks on the Deftones' debut 'Adrenaline'. There is a degree of the Refused sound within their riffs, but for the most part, the songs follow a pattern of verse riff, chorus riff that makes the tracks a bit too similar to each other. Sure, this is early days for the band, and even Refused got off to a pretty slow start on their first releases, so it would be wrong to completely write off Che now, but they do need to improve their songwriting in order to be seen as more than just an average hardcore band. There is conviction behind their songs and their point they are trying to make, but at the end of the day, there isn't anything new going on here, and you're better off just getting some albums by the original hardcore bands of the mid-eighties. Big fans of hardcore might be into this, but for the most part, this is hardcore by numbers.
