intro
Intriguing "blend of rock and popular punk" on fourth album from Ottawa-based group, whose songs have appeared previously on console games
Punchbuggy, through 'The Great Divide', deliver an album full of intent and passion that will put a smile on the face of any lover of tuneful, well-paced music. The band were formed in Ottawa, Canada, in 1994 and 'The Great Divide' is their 4th release. Punchbuggy have had their previous songs appear on console games and even in the U.S. comedian Tom Green’s movie, 'Freddy Got Fingered'. With credentials such as these it is a surprise that they are not better known on the U.K. circuit, but that’s the way most things transatlantic work. At times the band's blend of rock and popular punk takes unexpected twists and the vocals change pitch in a manner that is not often seen, yet the sound remains smooth and enticing. Twisting as if avoiding pursuit, Punchbuggy, carve their way through a good half an hour's worth of ardent pop-punk music at a pace to bob along to. Despite losing its way somewhat in the middle, 'The Great Divide' has moments of pure genius underlying each song, and a sense of soul that runs right through every note and every beat. The opening track, 'Same', is the most emotional song on the album and, musically, is a cut above the rest. In choosing any compilation for the summer you would have to include 'Same' as there is no doubt of its quality and potential. 'Way To Go' has a cheerful sound and provides the most perfect wake-up or pick-me-up call. Punchbuggy play music that will appeal to the multitude as it has a strong pop rock bond. This latest release incorporates their sound of old, but fuses it with a more mature sound than on their previous records.
