Now based in New York but originating from Tampa, Florida, Home formed in 1992 and unbelievably the title of the album does indeed indicate that this is their 14th album together. However, the first 8 of these were self-distributed cassette only releases on their own Screw Music Forever label. Following various album projects released during the ensuing years on Relativity, Emperor Jones and Jetset and a myriad of singles on numerous indies, the band at last seem to have found a more permanent residence at The Arena Rock Recording Co. (Licensed to Cooking Vinyl for release in the UK). Employing layered instrumentation, psychedelia, harmony vocals and a multitude of different styles, frequently in the course of the same song, Home certainly captivate the listener and demand a certain level of attention. That’s not to say that the band's sound isn’t accessible, they are, but any lapse in concentration and you’ll be wondering who changed the album without telling you! Encapsulating influences from The Band, Van Dyke Parks and The Beach Boys as well as more contemporary bands like Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips, Home even veer on occasion into prog-rock territory, albeit briefly. The influence of the album’s producer, Dave Fridmann should also be taken into account. He’s both the bass player in Mercury Rev and the man behind the mixing desk on the band’s breakthrough ’98 release Deserter’s Songs as well as last year’s hugely acclaimed Flaming Lips opus ‘The Soft Bulletin’. Having also worked on both Mogwai’s ‘Come On Die Young’ album and the Delgados latest ‘The Great Eastern’ his style and apparent Midas touch should keep him in work for some time yet. It would appear though that he’s not averse to sharing the credit having employed the assistance of The Flaming Lips Michael Ivins on Home’s XIV. The bulk of the credit though should go to Eric Morrison (piano, vocals), Andrew Deutsch (guitar, vocals), Brad Truax (bass) and Sean Martin (drums) who are the solid foundations of Home and have between them composed an album which you’ll be happy to live with for years to come.
