The Lone Star state has a rich musical history ('13th Floor Elevators', anyone?) and Monroe Mustang's second album, "The Elephant Sound", continues that fine tradition. By steeping themselves in space and beyond, they've created a drifting psychedelic record in only 33 minutes. Growing up in Norman, Oklahoma, the Monroe boys(now based in Austin, Texas) spent most of their time writing songs and mastering the 4-track recorder, the result of which was the Mustangs first album,"Plain Sweeping Themes For The Unprepared", which garnered much respect for its early 'Pink Floyd' and 'Spaceman 3 'influences. "The Elephant Sound" continues that voyage of subtle mystique while at the same time showing a homegrown Texas maturity. Watery guitars and illusory vocals(which are not unlike a young Michael Stipe) make for good listening while lying in bed and wishing of that faraway place. Sparse piano and bass lines give an almost eerie sense which you can feel inside and percussion provides the background that stitches it all together.Farout mellow songs that echo in the space between your ears and linger in the corners of your mind.
