'Symposium' were originally formed back in 1992 at a school in Kensington, West London by 5 teenagers. Having replaced the bassist it took them a few years to work their way into the music business but soon stardom almost glistened in their eyes. Released back in 1997, Symposium's debut was an achievement that lacked the credit it truly deserved. 'One day at a Time' lives up to the true nature of the band; taking each day as it comes. Symposium generate an invigorating sound that bursts with energy, depicting the experiences of themselves as adolescents, something all teenagers can relate to. Each track whets the appetite, producing uncontrolled reactions when played above normal aural acceptance. This, combined with the odd expletive, represents a lack of maturity, but one that captures an immense sense of enjoyment within the music. From the powerful contrasts used in 'Fairweather Friend' that reached number 25 in the U.K charts and 'Farewell To Twilight', an enthusiast's favourite, to 'Smiling', a more subdued track in which the pace changes, representing anguish and delight. The continual bombardment of pleasant sounds and strong guitar tunes makes this a must have even if lyrically, the music makes hardly any sense at all. Adults must cast their minds back to teenage fantasies whereas teenagers will find the tracks very close to life. When the tunes are as good as these nothing else really matters!
