intro
Accomplished comeback on first album in a decade from award-winning singer-songwriter Pixie Lott
One of the biggest names in pop fifteen years ago with her debut single ‘Mama Do’, award-winning musician Pixie Lott has released her first album since 2014. Co-produced by Dave Gibson and Jeeve, five years in the making, ‘Encino’ is a mix of autobiographical songs, centred around the key themes of love, nostalgia, family and being authentic, every song co-written by the singer. ‘Encino’, Pixie’s fourth album, explores contemporary topics such as harassment and cyberbullying and marks a striking departure in style and genre from her earlier work. The singer-songwriter described the intention behind the album: “I’m taking risks this time. Previously, I’ve gone in the direction others have envisioned for me but nobody really ever pushed me to try the things I wanted. It’s scary but I’m going with my heart now - I want to show other sides of myself.” Highlights of the thirteen-track collection include: the opener, the acoustic, country-pop ‘Show You Love’ with its strummed guitars, mandolins and gospel-style choir; the lead single, the powerful ‘Somebody’s Daughter’, addressing online bullying; the nostalgic ‘Blockbuster Video’; soulful, anthemic ‘Midnight Trash’ about “breaking up with insomnia”; ‘Further From Love’ with its insinuating beat and excoriating lyrics: “Why you gotta use your voice like a weapon?/…’Cause living in silence is deafening”; upbeat, country-style ‘Happy’; the piano ballad ‘Say So’ detailing the emotionally draining time she experienced during twelve weeks playing Holly Golightly in the 2016 West End production of ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’; and the country-blues closer ‘Comes Back Around’ (inspired by T.S.Eliot’s ‘Little Gidding’) on learning from past mistakes, bringing the record to full circle. Reflective, emotive, ‘Encino’ is an accomplished comeback.
