Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall) is a great interpreter of other people's songs with brilliant past versions of Everly Brothers and Joni Mitchell material. But, wisely, turning her attention to Bob Dylan, she treats his original melodies and arrangements with great respect. After all, it is Dylan himself who has often rendered his own best work almost unrecognisable in some of his own more recent live performances! On ‘Cat Power Sings Dylan’ - available as a double CD (£14) and double vinyl LP (£28) - Cat carefully recreates one of Dylan's most famous concerts – a 1966 show at Manchester's Free Trade Hall. This was where he played half the set acoustically and then switched to electric instruments for the second part, eliciting yells of “Judas” from some of the folk-fanatical audience. Cat Power's re-enactment was actually done last year at London's Royal Albert Hall and she admits she was very nervous – literally trembling – before the gig. She does sound a touch tentative on some of the acoustic tracks, but grows in confidence immediately she is joined by a five-piece band for fine electrified takes on ‘One Too Many Mornings’ and ;Like A Rolling Stone’. ‘Cat Power Sings Dylan’ is a great record. It is a reminder of how accomplished and versatile a performer Cat Power is.....and just how great some of Dylan's early work was, too.
