intro
Philamonjaro enjoys and photographs an intimate, stripped down set of Squeeze classics at City Winery in Chicago.
Armed with only a few guitars and a microphone, Glenn Tillbrook took to the stage for an intimate night of music at City Winery in Chicago. The first of two nights. And one of many City Winery stops in his U. fall tour. Celebrated as half of Squeeze’s songwriting duo, he along with his songsmith partner Chris Difford, has produced a string of era-defining hits that live on today. But what made hearing Squeeze songs unique this night was Tilbrook's ability to charge a roomful of fans with his renditions of guitar and vocals only arrangements. It proves that a great song, melody, lyrics, rhythm, guitar riffs and more, can thrive when performed completely differently than the recording. Imagine 'Annie Get Your Gun', 'Pulling Mussels (From A Shell)', 'Cool For Cats', 'Hourglass', 'Take Me, I’m Yours' and 'Tempted' stripped-to-the-bone. Then imagine the song’s author breathing renewed life to it. The set had the crowds fully enthralled as demonstrated when fans broke out in spontaneous singing during the choruses. There was. however. pin-drop silence as Tilbrook tackled an unaccompanied. note-for-note guitar solo during 'Black Coffee In Bed'. Nestled in the set were a couple covers: Bowie’s 'Star Man' and the classic 'My Boy Lollipop' (originally 'My Girl Lollipop'). And it all worked quite well.
