intro
Innovative and distinctive ninth album from Oklahoman singer-songwriter and country artist Monica Taylor
‘Trains, Rivers & Trails’ is the new album, her ninth, by the Oklahoman singer-songwriter of Scottish and Cherokee roots, Monica Taylor. The Cimarron Songbird, a nickname given to her by fellow musicians Bob Childers and Jimmy LaFave for her distinctive singing style and home location near the Cimarron River, takes the inspiration for eleven new recordings, seven original compositions and four covers often requested at live shows, from train rides and rivers and trails explored: “I’ve always wanted to put out an album of songs about rivers and old dirt roads… Being a country girl from birth, these are the things I am at home with.” Highlights of the eleven-track collection include: the jaunty opener’ Sound Of A Train’; ‘Salty Tears’, a song inspired by her Cherokee heritage, about her great-great-grandmother forced in the early 1800s to relocate to Oklahoma at the age of thirteen, her parents and sisters dying along the way; the infectious Cajun-influenced ‘Down In Louisiana’; ‘Train Take Me Away’ a plaintive, lively travelogue: “… this is my homage to my older family members who took to the trains during the Great Depression to find work… and the coming home, not ever wanting to leave home again”; and the closer, the slow waltz ‘The Ocoee Long Song’, the American Civil War its historical backdrop, the viewpoint the Southern women left behind while their men were off fighting. Featuring a pot-pourri of musical instruments, from fiddle, Dobro, banjo, mandolin to guitar, accordion, harmonica and piano, ‘Trains, Rivers & Trails’ re-imagines traditional country themes in innovative storytelling, an upbeat collection leaving the listener looking out for more.
