intro
Magisterial prog/rock EP from Connecticut-based band Head with Wings
Head with Wings, based in New Haven, Connecticut, have been building a reputation over the past few years for finely-crafted prog-rock. Lyricist and vocalist Joshua Corum, Andrew Testa on drums, bassist Steve Hill and guitarists Mike Short and Brandon Cousino have released a new EP, 'Comfort in Illusion', which cements their reputation as some of the finest purveyors of prog. Mixed by Greg Thomas and ChrisTeti, the EP was mastered by Kris Crummett at Interlace Audio in Portland, Oregon. The EP opens with ‘Of Uncertainty’, which explores a mind trying to overcome doubts: (“Pardon my uncertainty/There’s a wall breaking my pace/Shame it’s one I’ve built/To stand in my own way/And I won’t sit still when there’s more to build”). The brooding intro explodes into a crescendo of intertwined bell-like guitars and intricate drumming. Second track ‘Contemplating the Loop’ shifts and weaves, Corum’s vocals calling to mind a lower-range Geddy Lee. A haunting atmosphere pervades this contemplation of life lived under social structures and strictures. The final track, ‘In a House Without Clocks’, is the best track by far, a swirling confection of gorgeous guitars, pleasingly thrumming bass and fine vocal harmonies. Andrew Testa handles the complicated drum patterns with a dexterous ease. The lyrics examine concepts of time and living: (“The plan that never started/The waters left uncharted”). If you like the delicacy of Yes, the intensity of Devin Townsend and the epic grandeur of Rush, you will love this sublime EP from Head with Wings.
