intro
Warm and sunny Californian folk rock on debut album from super-group, GospelbeacH
'Pacific Surf Line'is the debut album from an accomplished super-group. The five members of GospelbeacH possess a resume that collectively draws from Beachwood Sparks, Furthur, the Tyde, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals and Everest. The album is filled with bright shining upbeat tunes from the get go. 'California Steamer' combines sunny buoyant tones from the onset with singing about a railroad running under western skies and starry nights. This is dream-capturing West coast folk rock that gives a glimpse of California railway history and rolling on across the dusty miles. “The California Steamer never runs on time… Make way for the Pacific Surf Line.” The lyrics on 'Sunshine Skyway' include “I’m running out of reasons to stay another season.” This is easy, earthy roots rock - an evocative take on California and times on a roll with nowhere to go. 'Come Down' features soft tones, with an acoustic based intro, and is a tune with an easy and comfortable lived-in feel. “I’ve loved you so long… It’s just the only thing I can’t replace.” The lyric mutates into a stinging guitar solo, the band rocking organically and in a groove. 'Southern Girl' is another easy down home tune that segues into an electric jamming finale. “Show me a sunset/I’ll show you a smile.” 'Out of My Mind (On Cope and Reed)' seems to include an atypical touch of a Velvet Underground=style boogie here, although (if you can imagine) nevertheless still within this band’s folk rock genre. “Put your best foot forward/Step into the sun/Never feel the end is near/It’s only just begun.” 'Alone' features a rollicking, driving beat, gaining in momentum as it progresses. 'Damsel in Distress' possesses a jazzy, electric guitar based feel and is an alluring, flowing closer. All in all, a solid debut album of work from GospelbeacH.
