intro
Extraordinary second album from Lonelady, the moniker for Manchester musician Julie Campbell, which combines sparse industrialism with both soul and funk
LoneLady , or Julie Campbell for Facebook purposes, drops her extraordinary second LP, 'Hinterland'. On the surface Lonelady has a sound nestled somewhere between Hot Chip, Ladytron and LCD Sound System. What at first, however, seems to be a stripped back combination of electronica and acoustic music soon reveals a whole level of other influences and styles, and therein lies the appeal and soul of 'Hinterland'. LoneLady provides a glorious groove to a lot of these tracks with drum loops and programming which subtly recall Parliament and Funkadelic. The choppy and danceable guitars and solid bass lines have an impact in their sparseness rather than trying to fill every bit of audio space available, most notably on the title track and the aptly-named 'Groove It Out'. There is a real human quality to what at first seems to be quite a rigid and precise delivery. At times the song construction and execution reminded me a lot Darwin Deez, but with a North of England industrial backdrop rather than Deez’s dorky and sunny Californian approach. Look up 'Bunkerpop' and 'Silvering' if this sounds like your thing. LoneLady manages to perfectly marry the sparse, industrial feel of Joy Division and Tubeway Army with a soulful warmth, and to provide something that is both original and unique.
