Filter Distortion - Transition

If you like 80's music, you are going to love this four piece electro band that have been described as a mix of OMD and Depeche Mode. Liverpool-based band Filter Distortion put themselves on a self-imposed year of confinement in a windowless room, and set about producing their fine debut album 'Transition', which has been released on vinyl and download only. Recorded using just three microphones, the band wrote and produced all the album's tracks before mastering them with engineer and producer Daniel Woodward at Liverpool's Whitewood Recording Studios. 'Transition' certainly has a distinct 80's electro feel but the band have given that sound a modern edge, with driving guitars and live drums, to create something quite powerful. Me personally, I can not only see those similarities to the aforementioned giants of the decade but also to others like Heaven 17 and Classix Nouveau. I would also suggest that there are splatterings of Kraftwerk in there too. Anyway, it all makes for a brilliant mix of everything you liked about that era with an infusion of today's sounds to go with it. ‘Frequency Modulation’ is an OMD throwback with tinges of Apollo 11 on it and ‘Pressure’ starts with a Killers type synth. ‘Cameras in the Dark’ has more of a guitar sound and 'Game Over' is Kraftwerk-influenced whereas ‘Black and White’, ‘Resonator Express’, ‘Midnight Drive’and ‘Neon Nights’ are just glorious tracks that slap you square across the face with a wet fish and yell eighties down your tabs. The penultimate track ‘Lost Boys’ meanwhile sounds like a combination between present-day Visage and classic Ultravox. The band are attracting an ever-increasing following, thanks in part to having their music featured on UK television and international radio with two tracks from the album 'Cameras in the Dark' and 'Neon Nights' having both been selected as BBC 6 Music's Tom Robinson's Fresh on the Net Faves. Although they have toes dipped deep in other bands' bathtubs, Filter Distortion are quite capable of washing behind their own ears with their own flannels and creating their own particular suds. The album is available as a digital download and limited edition vinyl. Superb!
