Our Pennyblackmusic Bands' Night in Glasgow, which will take place at new city centre club The River, will feature performances from ex-Hipsway front man Grahame Skinner, Big Hogg, Neil Sturgeon, The Wellgreen, A New International, The Aviators, Zoe Bestel and Nicola Black
Pennyblackmusic in conjunction with the Wickerman Festival presents an eclectic eight act bill including Grahame Skinner (Hipsway, Cowboy Mouth) at new city centre club The River (the former Barfly) in Clyde Street, Glasgow. The evening will be Pennyblack’s second Scottish bands night, and will be a superb warm-up for this summer’s Wickerman Festival. Tickets are a budget price of £5 in advance and £7 on the door. Each ticket purchased will be entered into a raffle on the evening to win a pair of tickets (which costs £210) for this year’s Wickerman Festival at Dundrennan in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th July. All eight acts will be playing 25 minute sets. The first act will be on shortly after 7 p.m. and the final act off stage at 12.30 p.m. Grahame Skinner will be on stage at 10.30 p.m. sharp. The entire bill consists of as follows: GRAHAME SKINNER A legendary figure on the Glaswegian music scene, Skinner was the vocalist with the bestselling Hipsway ('The Honeythief', 'Ask the Lord', 'Long White Car'). He has also fronted the much acclaimed brooding indie project Cowboy Mouth, and sung with various other acts including The Jazzateers, Witness and The Pleasurelords. Grahame Skinner has recently returned with a new band The Skinner Group, and his first album of twenty years 'Back on the Horse'. "Skin" will be playing a rare solo set for Pennyblackmusic, and will be looking deep into his back catalogue as well as introducing songs from the new album. BIG HOGG One of the rising stars of the Glasgow scene, Big Hogg are the psych-jazz-pop-rock brainchild of guitarist Justin Lumsden, who - having cut his teeth in Aberdeen's oft-overlooked fusion scene of a few years back- brings his considerable experience and diverse influences to bear on this group. A sextet, Big Hogg have released both 'Bears in the Attic', a full-length album, and also 'Pilgrim', a mini-album. Incorporating influences such as Hendrix, Captain Beefheart and Classic Blues into their sound, they have just signed to Neon Tetra, Glasgow's longest-serving independent label. NEIL STURGEON After 2 acclaimed albums with The Goldenhour, Neil Sturgeon now performs as a solo acoustic act and has won much acclaim for his socially observant and witty lyrical pop. He is currently working on a new album 'Geography & Luck' with Teenage Fanclub's Raymond McGinley at the helm, and has so far produced 2 fine singles 'Break Me' and 'Ride the Tide'). Neil has also recently released the second volume in his 'Painting Pictures In The Dark' series of his rare home recordings. THE WELLGREEN The project of multi-instrumentalists Marco Rea and Stuart Kidd, The Wellgreen have become regulars on their local music scene with their unique form of harmonic pop. Their nineteen-song debut album 'Wellgreens' of a couple of years ago drew them favourable comparisons with The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills and Nash, while its follow-up ' Grin and Bear it', which came out at the end of last year, has also won them excellent reviews. A NEW INTERNATIONAL Biff Smith's new five-piece band were formed last year out of the ashes of The Starlets, who recorded three albums of classic indie pop and were once described by 'The Scotsman' as being "one of Scotland's finest, most underrated bands." A New International's music is "an evocative mixture of cinematic strings, circus lights, carnival and cabaret, music hall, gypsy, chanson, a little bit of folk, a little bit of flamenco too, yet with pop at its beating heart." Their influences include Scott Walker, Calexico and Ennio Morricone, and they will be releasing their their debut album 'Come to the Fabulon!', which was produced by Colin Elliott who has worked with Richard Hawley, shortly. AVIATORS The Aviators are a young and energetic rock outfit from East Kilbride. Described as “fusing the best of U2 and a hint of the Kings of Leon,” they released their debut single ‘What Do You Want from Me?’ to much acclaim last year, and are currently now working on their first album which they hope will come out later in the year. The Aviators have played headline shows at many of Glasgow’s venues including the ABC and Barrowlands, and have promised us a set of blistering, high-octane rock. ZOE BESTEL Since picking up the ukulele at the age of just 13, Zoe has won admiration from the press and supported internationally acclaimed folk musicians including multi award winning Emily Smith, Steve Tilsten, Steve Hicks and Lynn Gouldbourn, the award winning Paul McKenna Band, The PeatBog Faeries and Emma's Imagination. Still only aged sixteen, Zoe Bestel has been a huge hit on the Acoustic Stage at the last two Wickerman Festivals and will be playing songs from her debut album, 'Sir Lucas and the Moon'. NICOLA BLACK Nicola, armed with new material written on a recent US tour, has been described as “an amazing talent” by Cameron Murray of Alive Radio. Hailing from Galloway, Nicola has been delighting audiences from Alaska to New South Wales, and is the curator and MC for the Acoustic Stage at Wickerman. Her unique blend of folk, rock and melodic pop, coupled with a massive voice, make her live performances truly memorable. Nicola has released two albums and will be again gracing the stage at this year’s festival. She will be our Master of Ceremonies for the night.
