intro
First-rate dream-pop/shoegaze on debut album from Houston -based band, Drowner
Drowner originate from Houston, Texas and, having begun life as the side project of Swimming In, Apples To Earth guitarist Darren Emanuel, dabble in their own form of dream-pop/shoegaze. Right from the start ‘Glow’ wastes no time with its gently chaotic and quiet yet noisy hooks which swirl around your brain and pick you up for the ride. ‘Automatic Zen’ would cause the ear of many Jesus and Mary Chain fans to prick right up and pay attention, only rather than a sharp and deep Scots vocal there is a wonderful and mystical female vocal courtesy of lead singer Anna Bouchard. As ‘You’re Beautiful, I Forgive You’ progresses, it seems to delve deeper into all the sounds and ideas that the first few songs have offered up. ‘Metro’ and ‘Our Last Day’ act as a platform for Drowner to show off their hand at creating magnificent and huge walls of sound that would be at home amongst anything My Bloody Valentine could offer. The more relaxed moments such as ‘Mirror’ and ‘Stay With Me’ have a Pretenders-meets-latter career Incubus air to them. A real high-point as far as the band showing their real knack for crafting wonderful music is ‘Shadow’, which leans the other way on the wall of sound scale as it really gives space for all the instruments to breathe and is definitely a case of less is more which really brings out the depth this band possess. ‘You’re Beautiful, I Forgive You’ is absolutely jammed with a sound so full and all-encompassing that you can’t help but be swept away in its current of reverb and distortion, and its incredible use of sound thoughout.
