intro
Matt William takes photographs of Brighton gothic trio Esben and the Witch at the Scala in London
Named after a Danish fairy tale, Esben and the Witch are a gothic trio who have now released on Matador Records two albums, 2011’s ‘Violet Cries’ and this year’s ‘Wash the Sins Not Only the Face’. The group, who come from Brighton, have won much critical acclaim for their mournfully beautiful, but intense live shows, and have been playing to rising audiences. These photographs were taken by Matt Williams on the 26th February at one of the largest shows to date at the 1,000 capacity Scala on the London date of a recent British tour.
