intro
Frenzied and quirky experimentalism on third album from Chicago-based art rockers, Volcano!
Initially a nervous post-math rock act, Volcano! invented new and odd tango steps just as you were figuring out how to come to grips with their misleading funk sound. So, in an awful cliché, let the bustling Volcano! rock you. Just a trio, the three Volcano! members must think and play quickly and, despite their zany frenzy, they do so to near perfection, throwing in a splattering of distinctive art rock, which is typical of Chicago( I think I can safely write). From the narrow and thick to the wide and mind expanding , the sound of 'Piñata' is rather versatile. Dry wit, protest and a teaspoon of sarcasm go into the words. Mark Cartwright knows how to create buzzing riffs from the synths and the bass, Aaron With is a gymnast on the snares even though his vocals go occasionally flat and Sam Scranton makes sure everybody keeps in line and stais on board with his drum work. And, indeed, 'Piñata' sounds best on LP.
