Saint Etienne are an indie dance band, who were formed in London by childhood friends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. Both Stanley and Wiggs intended to originally use a variety of singers, but after singer Sarah Cracknell appeared on their third single, ‘Nothing Can Stop Us’, they decided to make her their permanent vocalist. While she sung on just a few of the tracks on their 1991 first album, ‘Foxbase Alpha’, Cracknell has gone on to be the main vocalist on all the band’s albums, ‘So Tough’ (1993), ‘Tiger Bay’ (1994), ‘Good Humor’ (1998), ‘Sound of Water’ (2000), ‘Finisterre’ (2002) and ‘Tales from Turnpike House’ (2005). The group have moved on over the years from being a house act to having an electro folk sound. Saint Etienne recently released their first album in seven years, ‘Words and Music by Saint Etienne’. These photographs of Sarah Cracknell were taken by Pennyblackmusic photographer Darren Aston during a week long tour to promote the album at the Kazimier in Liverpool on the 24th May.
