White Hills - Frying On This Rock

New York space rockers White Hills have a massive cult following, and are super collectable due to their mega limited edition releases. The band consists of Dave W on vocals and guitar; Ego Sensation on bass, who is a cool blonde chick; Antronhy on synths who is also Julian Cope's drummer, and Nick Name whom is their touring and recording drummer. 'Frying on This Rock' is only five songs deep, but it takes you beyond a journey that many bands fail to achieve in their lifetimes. 'Song of Everything' is loud from the offset, sounding like a 70's Krautrock track infused by punk's raw power, and with a vocal that out shines glam's glitter. It is as if the New York Dolls really had invented punk if they had not been too busy being a wannabe Stones tribute band. This is then topped off with a killer Hendrix guitar solo to die for. 'Robot Stomp' will either bore you to tears or have you in complete ecstasy. A hazy space rock number that sounds like Spacemen 3 on a loop, it comes to a surprisingly abrupt finish at the end of eleven minutes plus. 'The Dream You See' is more like they are live, heavy, progressive and with a 60's psychedelic edge that hints at hippydom, but that is done with a new wave punk edge. Its last two minutes go off into another unexpected direction yet again. 'Pads of Light' sounds like a mid 70's infusion of big heavy hungry rock, but when you think you know what is going to happen next they once again change their direction and landscape, taking them to further unexpected destinations. It is once more heavy and hypnotic and the sounds just totally whip around your head, taking you on a perfect trip. 'I Write a Thousand Letters (Pulp on Bone)' ends the album, and is a sonic landscape of fourteen minutes, almost nugaze in its volumes, while the guitar crys out like a wounded animal in pain. 'Frying On This Rock' is a mindblowing album, but it is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
