intro
Suprisingly effective heavy metal played by Scandinavian jazz group, the Hedvig Mollestad Trio
Certainly a curio, this one. A jazz trio, lead by electric guitarist Hedvig Mollestad, busting out heavy rock. Mollestad is an acclaimed jazz guitarist, and plays in several combos, but she grew up listening to heavy metal, and here she plays tribute to those influences. So, we get crunching rock riffs, hair raising guitar solos, thumping drums… and a stand-up double bass. There’s even an instrumental cover of ‘Blood Witch’ by the Melvins. It’s an unlikely, but effective, mix. The loose, organic jazz improvisation cancels out the formulaic aspects of hard rock, while the power and drive of the rock cancels out jazz’s tendency to noodle. The trio are at their best when they let their jazz and rock influences come together at once. I can’t see this being anyone’s favourite album of the year, but it has plenty of tracks you’ll want to slot onto mix CDs, and it’ll sound great coming out of your stereo. Much, much better than you’d think.
