Russian Circles - Embros
Label: Sargent House
Format: CD

intro

Abrasive fourth album from Chicago post-metal act Russian Circles, whose loudness does nto compensate for a lack of originality

Russian Circles sound as if Ennio Morricone took an acid trip. Loud and abrasive yet refined, Russian Circles perform very well in their attempt to out anger both Mogwai and Neurosis at the very same time. They evolve around blasts of heavy instrumentalist post rock, in a stream line close to perfection. Somewhat sloppy at points, and mercilessly accurate at others, 'Empros' takes us through a bunch of tracks that in between them leave no room for alternatives. The instrumental mayhem post rock of Russian Circles serves so many purposes. There's the splattering 'Praise Be Man' to begin with, yet the tough get going on '309' in a really thunderous way. Russian Circles make heavy metal sound as if it is an endangered species. Neat, tight and entirely disposable, Russian Circles, however, lack originality for which their loudness does not compensate.
