intro
Superb reissue of debut album of Virginia-based psychedelic group, the Young Sinclairs
The Young Sinclairs come from Roanoke in Virginia. Originally released back in 2007 on the band's own label, Magic Twig, ‘Feel Bad’ consists of their early output from 2005 and 2006. The title track has a strong retro feel, something like the Velvet Underground at the time of their first album, but done with a modern take. ‘Cancelled Flight’ has a much more trippy sound and is much more Californian in feel. ‘This Tyme’ recalls Biff Bang Pow! in its 60s sound. If this had been released back in the 1980s, it would be on Creation. ‘Sleepy Head’ is somewhat twee with a lush C86 Beatles-esque sound and it jangles perfectly. ‘Thanks Paul Horn’ has a slow jangle and sounds like a cross between primitive R.E.M. and mid-period Beatles. ‘Can You Hear the Bells?’ is a psychedelic number which as it progresses moves into ‘Revolver’/Sgt Pepper’s’ experimentalterritory. ‘Time is Not Today’ is another Beatles-influenced number with vocals from singer Samuel Lunsford that recalls the early Byrds. ‘Engineer Man’ is a power pop number that sounds like the early Who, while ‘Left and Right’ has an experimental Beatles feel, which is both trippy and atmosphere-based in a weird drug way. ‘Never Know’ has Beatles/Byrds vibes, while ‘I Don't Know Why’, which ends the album, is like a George Harrison number and Rickenbacker-flavoured with lush harmonies. An excellent reissue of this band’s early recordings.
