intro

Astounding ninth album from Mice Parade, the moniker of New York percussionist Adam Pierce, which mixes influences as diverse as flamenco, indie rock, post rock and jazz

New York percussionist Adam Pierce releases the ninth album under his Mice Parade moniker, 'What It Means to Be Left-Handed'. Mice Parade, as a band, is made up of performers from all over the world, including Caroline Lufkin (Temporary Residence’s Caroline) as well as members of HIM, Macha and the Dylan Group, with guests on this album also including Swahili vocalist Somi and members from the Japanese bands Clammbon and Toe. This international mix of contributors is evident in the album’s sound, which is world-music in the truest sense – mixing influences as diverse as flamenco, indie rock, Sigur Rós -style melodic post-rock, West African highlife and jazz. Pierce’s own contribution is the most impressive aspect, putting his multi-instrumental skills to extraordinarily good use, playing flamenco guitar, keyboards, tuned percussion and samples. But what matters most is of course not how much you experiment with mixing styles and instruments, but how the end result sounds – and in this case, it’s pretty astounding. This is an up-beat, easy to dance to and ultimately extremely fun record with a really sunny, summer sound. If Christmas carols aren’t your bag, this could be the perfect antidote.
