intro
Excellent 60's soul-influenced indiepop on latest single from Glaswegian group, Camera Obscura
The first single from Camera Obscura’s new album, 'My Maudlin Career', is a brilliant piece of 60’s soul revival which drifts in like a welcome breeze and lifts you up. It’s the sort of song that makes you want to go driving in the sunshine – with the top down, if you’re lucky enough to be in the midst of a mid-life crisis and own a convertible. Whatever it may make you want to do, it will certainly make you happy while you’re doing it. ‘French Navy’’s b-side is an alt-country reworking of the Elvis track, ‘You’re the Only Star in my Blue Heaven’ (surely up there with some of the greatest song titles ever?) It’s a great version, which adds a haunting quality to a song which is usually a bit more swingin’, and acts as a great counterpoint to the more upbeat style of ‘French Navy’. Also included is a remix of the a-side by Jim Noir, which is interesting, but really just works to emphasise how good the original mix is.
