intro
Difficult-to-pigeonhole fourth album from versatile London band Sergeant Buzfuz, which originally began as a solo project for originally Sheffield-based singer-songwriter Joe Murphy but has now extended into a five peice band
Sergeant Buzfuz started out as just Joe Murphy, who is originally from Sheffield, but are now a five piece band based in London. 'High Slang' is the fourth album, and the first as a full band as opposed to a solo album from Joe or one using guest musicians. Don’t expect songs about normal subjects. 'Here Come The Popes Pts 2, 3 and 4' are stream of consciousness style historical (hysterical?) rants about the medieval popes and their wild and generally inappropriate sexual antics. They are both funny and educational, whilst 'Names for Girls' is a sad tale of early death and plans for life unrealised. My favourite by far is 'Kay Malone', mainly for its use of drones and repetition that give atmosphere to this song of alcoholic excess. Ostensibly placed in the UK anti-folk scene, although this just seems to be a dumping ground for bands playing challenging and exciting music that can’t be pigeonholed elsewhere, Sergeant Buzfuz are one to watch out for.
