intro
Perplexing, but impressive second single from Montreal band Land of Talk's debut album, 'Applause Cheer Boo Hiss'
As much as I like Land Of Talk I can never quite put my finger on how to describe them. They have an indie rock, laid back, lazy folk rock sound, sounding somewhere between Natalie Merchant's 10,000 Maniacs and the Duke Spirit. Maybe not being able to quite pinpoint them is part of their appeal. ‘Speak To Me Bones’ is a fiery and spirited song. The music is very much indie rock but Elizabeth Powell's vocals are almost lazy and slurred. The band, however, seems to exist with contradictions. You would think that songs like these shouldn’t work but this one does. It has an easy tempo that you think you know but just when you get the hang of it you pick out something that you didn’t hear before. Elizabeth's vocals seem to catch up the tempo of the song but you can’t quite pinpoint where it all gathers pace. Perplexing it maybe. A good song? You bet
