intro
New album from the Pet Shop Boys, which finds them remixing tracks of their own and also by a wide range of other artists including the Killers, David Bowie,Yoko Ono and Madonna
The latest album from the Pet Shop Boys finds them remixing the tracks of a broad range of other artists. It opens with their remix of the Killers 'Read My Mind', one of the stand-out tracks from their second album, 'Sam's Town'. It is more keyboard based than the original while Brandon Flowers' vocal is much more laid back. This extended track takes a while to really kick in but when it does it has a rocking and emo electronica sound. Next up is a reworking of David Bowie's 'Halo Spaceboy'.Sung as duet between Neil Tennant and Bowie, it is full of big beats, very disco-based in sound and very camp. The Pet Shop Boys then remix themselves on 'Integral', which sounds like it has been recorded live in concert, and recalls Frankie Goes to Hollywood with its large grooves. Yoko Ono's 'Walking on Thin Ice', the last thing that John Lennon recorded the night before he was murdered, follows. The Pet Shop Boys did play in her backing band when she played Patti Smith's Meltdown and this is unsurprisingly more synth-based then the original. A remix of Madonna's 'Sorry' follows. Coming from her recent album, 'Confessions on a Dance Floor', it is even more disco-based than the original. Their remix of Atomizer's 'Hooked on Radiation' sounds like Babylon Zoo mixed at the wrong speed, while that of Rammstein's 'Mein Teil', recalls Laibach but is even more European and more dance based. It ends with the Pet Shop Boys' recent single, 'I'm With Stupid', which is massive in sound and the Pet Shop Boys at very best.
