Steveless - Mistakes in All the Right Places

Steveless return to full-band form with their second release for Cherryade Records, 'Mistakes in all the Right Places'. Once again Dan Newman leads his merry band of noise-makers (now including a man named Steve who, according to the sleeve notes, will change his name to Hitler Fist to avoid upset) with a collection of songs ranging in themes from Yul Brynner in 'Westworld' to one of the band having an existential crisis to sitting in a bedroom reading books. The style hasn’t really changed from previous album, 'Popular Music In Theory', but as the saying goes: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Sounding like the Fall had a baby with Arab on Radar, Steveless crash and bash their way through 12 songs of pop put through a grinder. Even the deceivingly titled ‘Obligatory Love Song’ gives no respite from the noise – though it is a brilliantly quirky bit of musical magic, all yelping vocals, honking keyboards and twisted guitars driven along by a frantic rhythm section. Other stand-out tracks include ‘Paz’, which hammers its way through to its (almost) sing-a-long chorus of “I think I’ve found what I wanna be!”, and ‘Patience’, which sounds like psychedelic rock that’s “gone a bit funny” since it had that knock on the head. It actually reminds me quite a lot of Pink Floyd’s first album. The 44 second ‘Robots in the Rain’ is also highly entertaining! 'Mistakes in all the Right Places' is a perfect title for this record, because if anything went wrong with it, it was certainly for the best. If you like your music fast, witty, shambolic and short-lived, then Steveless is the band for you!
