intro
Fantastic summery-sounding and reggae-influenced fifth album from Californian punk pop act the Mad Caddies
Those globe trotting, self titled pirate punks the Mad Caddies have once again produced with their 5th full length album, 'Keep It Going', a record that is sure to keep them in loot and gold for a few years yet. The Mad Caddies who consist of Chuck on vocals, Sascha on guitar, Brian on drums, Ed on trombone and Keith on trumpet and vocals, began back in the heady days of the mid 1990’s in the central coast of California. With bands such as No Doubt, NOFX, and Sublime all coming into their own around that time it is easy to see the similarities that the Mad Caddies have with these a and also why they belong firmly up there with such big names. After being picked up in 1996 by punk legend Fat Mike of the aforementioned NOFX, the tubby punker signed Mad Caddies to his label Fat Wreck Chords and from there they blossomed. The Mad Caddies fund their piracy by playing sun-drenched melodies, that merge punk with reggae and ska rhythms. The trombone and wondering bass lines are a staple of this and the Mad Caddies do this so well. This is a bunch of guys who are out there living life and you can hear that coming through on this album. Songs like ‘Today’, ‘Tired Bones’ and ‘Pyramid Scheme’ are all ska punk tunes, and, bouncing nicely along with the help of an occasional punk rock riffs, recall No Doubt at their very best. If you are familiar with Green Day's ‘King for a Day’ you will love these tunes. ‘Don’t Go’ is a summer anthem waiting to happen. It glows of sunny carefree days just soaking life up with not a care in the world. One special moment is when the band respectfully cover the reggae classic ‘Riding for a Fall’ which originally by Delroy Wilson. ‘State of Mind’is another highlight of the album and comes in the form of an infectiously bouncy ska tune which will get you out of your chair dancing around your kitchen and singing along to it after half a listen, no matter how much you need to get done. This is a fantastic and entertaining album that, as the summer seems to be rearing its head more and more at the minute, has the potential to liven many a life up and servses as a welcome soundtrack to many people's summer.
