intro

Delicate, lo-fi high quality pop on full-length debut album from the Library Trust, the project of Manchester-based singer-songwriter Rob Edwards

You’d think that the Manchester singer-songwriter canon was full to bursting right now with such local heroes as Stephen Fretwell, Johnny Bramwell (I Am Kloot), Liam Frost and Roger Quigley (At Swim Two Birds and the Montgolfier Brothers) all eeking out an honourable existence in a competitive market place, but there is always room for quality. Rob Edwards’ the Library Trust has just that quality, and while similar certainly to all the above mentioned, is still a fine find in its own right. Following on from last year’s ultra-limited ‘Build Yourself A Snow-globe’ single this simple 8 track CD is a thing of rare beauty to eat chocolate fudge ice cream off by day and hide under your pillow by night. Drawing heavily from his experiences growing up in a small northern town, Edwards’ uses sad but beautiful arrangements to bring his delicate tales of basic human emotions gloriously to life. It is hard to find a weak link in these songs, but in ‘Harbour’ (with the brilliantly put lyric “In a town full of secrets, I’ve got my own”) and ‘As Broken As You Think’ (with equally genius lyric “England and the English, failed summers, not quite cold winters and I love it. It makes me stable. There’s nothing romantic about failure”) the Library Trust have two instant sadness-stained classics. It is songs like these that almost make me feel privileged to have a bruised heart. Time to renew the library card.
