intro
Experimental psyschedelic space rock on second album from husband and wife duo Viva Voce
“Hey y’all, we do not fuck around.” Husband and wife duo Anita and Kevin Robinson certainly are straight talking people. There’s no, er, fucking around, so to speak. Just to reinforce the point they’ve even called one of their songs 'We Do Not Fuck Around'. 'Get Yr Blood Sucked Out” carries on from where 2004’s 'The Heat Can Melt Your Brain' left off. All cosmic, psychedelic rock but with a love of harmonies as well as angular guitars and a desire to slowly build up a song from humble beginnings – much loved of Galaxie 500. The album centrepiece 'So Many Miles' delivers all this in a nutshell. As if mid-era Pink Floyd started jamming with Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and then threw in some trumpets on top. And there’s plenty of experimentation too. Along with the usual instruments of guitar and drums, the Robinsons also have a go at playing the bowed saw and even a fishing rod makes an appearance. Likewise the drone groove of 'Faster Than a Dead Horse' turns into the folk-ish “Special Thing'(although not the band’s finest hour). The following 'Never Be Like Yesterday' comes over all John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Viva Voce though is at its best when letting rip, being unconstrained as with 'Helicopter'. When they are, effectively, fucking around.
