intro
Lacklustre latest single from Beth Orton's disappointing new album 'Comfort of Strangers'
Oh, dear, I love Beth Orton dearly, but her recent album,'Comfort of Strangers' is a big no no. After her last great album 'Daybreaker', upon which several songs were co-written with Johnny Marr, she returns with 'Comfort of Strangers', an album of half thought out ideas. This is a double A side upon which both songs come from that album. After seeing Miss Orton come out of many an after show very drunk, she returns to us with a song called 'Shopping Trolley'. It is hardly rock and roll is it? 'Comfort of Strangers' is slightly better. Beth sounds like a female Nick Drake on it in its minimal arrangement. It features light acoustic guitar that sounds like it has been plucked, which is merged with soft jazzy drums, and a slight hint of organ. It is all finished off with an early version of 'Pieces of Sky',the last track on 'Comfort of Strangers', which is better than the other two tracks released here and is a lot louder. It is basically a demo but returns your faith in her. If you don't own any of her work though, you're better adding another £2 to your spending budget and buying either of her first two albums, 'Central Reservation' and 'Trailer Park' from one of the Virgin or HMV sales.
