intro
Sparse, but first-rate second release on the Ochre label for San Francisco five piece Mellow Drunk, which, while psychedelic in tone, manages to pull of the trick of not sounding retro
San Francisco five piece Mellow Drunk's second release on the Ochre label is a mere 5 tracks long and lasts just 17 minutes, but it is excellent stuff. Their Ochre debut and second album 'Never Sleep at Night' came out at the end of last year and the songs on this EP, which follow on from it., are all fairly short . They are not clogged up with too much instrumentation, but have just enough to tell the story that accompanies each song well. The guitar playing is melodic and beautiful. Frontman Leigh Gregory's vocals are hard to describe. The nearest he sounds like, however, is the Auteurs' and Black Box Recorder's Luke Haines, but without Luke's bitter hatred. The EP's overall sound is psychedelic in tone, but doesn't sound retro at all. Mellow Drunk sound totally unlike any of the other bands on Ochre, who are more avant garde and experimental. I look forward to hearing more from them

"Richly intoxicating" second album from San Francisco five piece Mellow Drunk, whose frontman Leigh Gregory draws distinct comparisions with Steve Kilbey from the Church |
