intro
Surreal garage rock on second album from treoy Gregory, bassist for the Dirtbombs and lead singer of the Witches
Massive fuzz and reverb drools its way out of the speaker as the vocalist moans what appears to be an obtuse gothic ode to mental break down. It’s called 'Dracula Has Risen From The Pond'. The singer (and songwriter, and performer on just about every instrument) is Troy Gregory, bassist for the Dirtbombs and lead singer of the Witches. The reverb, of course, is courtesy of producer Jim Diamond. Gregory’s previous album on the Fall of Rome label, 'Sybil', made interesting use of a number of Detroit rock bands to support his cool croon to great effect, but the cohesion stemming from Gregory handling the lion’s share of the musical chores makes 'Laura' the stronger album. The simple riffs have the catchiness of T.Rex, and even if you can’t understand what Gregory is singing about half the time (if not more), it at least leaves an emotional impression of foreboding. If garage rock with great heaps of distortion and a spook house aesthetic is your thing, you can’t go wrong with 'Laura'.
