intro
Spectacular first new single from the Bangles, since their worldwide smash, 'Eternal Flame', back in the summer of 1988
'Something That You Said' is the first new single by California's the Bangles, since their worldwide No. 1 'Eternal Flame', back in the summer of 1988. As a marketing tool, it is pretty much perfect. As well as featuring 'Something That You Said, it also has on it 'Getting Out of Hand', the A Side of the first single that the band recorded, back when it was still working under the name of the Bangs, and Annette Zilinakes was playing bass in the group before ex-Runaway Michael Steele replaced her. On the end of 'Something That You Said' as well , there is an acoustic version of 'Eternal Flame'. 'Something That You Said' is the sound of a now mature band and is the greatest love song ever recorded, since their last one. It is beautifully played and has a classic pop sound with some great lead guitar by Vicki Peterson. 'Getting Out of Hand' is stunning. Recorded back in 1981, it is garage rock in its most primitive form, but is also reminiscent of the Beatles when they were very young and fresh faced, and looking down on Manchester Square on the cover of 'Please Please Me'. Susanna Hoffs' Rickenbacker playing on it moves into true Byrds territory. The song is about love and all the hassles that go with it, especially when you're young. 'Eternal Flame' needs no introduction. It is the best love song ever written, and is far superior to McCartney's 'Yesterday'. This stripped down version will reduce you to a pulp. The Bangles are the greatest girl band ever. There is no doubt about that.
