intro
Fun and distinctive latest mini-album from PinkPantheress, the project of self-styled ‘new nostalgic’ artist, Victoria Walker.
Self-styled ‘new nostalgic’ artist, British singer-songwriter PinkPantheress (Victoria Walker) came to social media prominence in 2021when her three singles ‘Passion’, ‘Pain’ and ‘’Break It Off’ became viral hits, the songs featuring in her debut mixtape, ‘To Hell With It’, which reached no.20 in the UK Album Charts. Following up on her 2023 debut album ‘Heaven Knows’, her second mixtape ‘Fancy That’, which she wrote and produced, traverses different dance genres, the songs set against a wry stream of consciousness lyrical background, revealing a myriad of influences from Basement Jaxx to Sugababes and Just Jack. True to her stated maxim, “a song doesn’t need to be longer than two minutes 30”, the breezy, busy mixtape comes in at just over 20 minutes. Songs to listen out for in this nine-track collection include: the tongue-in-cheek opener ‘Illegal’ with its conversational lyrics, disco-esque synths and drum and bass underlay; the sultry, sensual lead single ‘Tonight’; bittersweet ‘Stars’ with its incisive storytelling and trenchant lines: “Now , why do you wanna go and put starz in their eyes?/It’s the same old story, well, they just didn’t realise”; slower tempo ‘Nice To Know You’ with its infectious hooks; and the euphoric closer ‘Romeo’ with its string accompaniment and romantic vibe. ‘Fancy That’ comes out ahead of a gig by the performer at London’s 02 Brixton Academy in September.
