intro
Striking and emotive fourth album from Virginia-based singer-songwriter Morgan Wade
Virginia-raised country singer-songwriter Morgan Wade has just released her fourth album, following up on her 2023 ‘Psychopath’ and guest-performing on the 2024 tour of Alanis Morrisette with Joan Jett. ‘Obsessed’, produced by Wade’s touring Guitarist Clint Wells, is an evocative mix of original songs with raw, authentic lyrics, imprinted by Wade’s own harrowing real-life experiences, resulting in a distinctive sound somewhere between country and rock. Key themes are dealing with loneliness and a search for love. Making the record was a personal quest for Wade: “I really wanted to get back to doing what I used to do. Just make this whatever I wanted it to be”. Highlights of this fourteen-track collection include: the layered, energetic, melodic rock opener ‘Total Control’, highlighting Wade’s distinctive, gravelly voice; the contrasting, wistful ballad ‘Department Store’; experimental grunge-tinged ‘Time To Love, Time To Kill’; the romantic pop title track; sultry ‘Juliet’ about a secret love: “Juliet, don’t keep me hidden/I’m aware that I’m forbidden”; the aching, stripped-back ‘2A.M. In London’: “I know what it’s like when it’s late at night/And my mind talks good and loud”; the emotive ‘Spin’; a moving duet with Californian pop star Kesha on ‘Walked On Water’; the epic ‘Crossing State Lines’ with its heart-rending refrain: “Yeah, you looked like heaven and what kind of hell was this?”; pared-back acoustic, traditional country ‘Moth To A Flame’ with its atmospheric accompaniment; and the cinematic rock closer ‘Deconstruction’ with its crashing piano chords, soaring vocals and optimistic lyrics: “For the first time in my life/I finally feel seen”. Expressing an unflinching vulnerability, ‘Obsessed’ sees a new mode for Wade, with a softer, more romantic touch interacting with her trademark rawness.
