Generation Z, Southampton-raised musician Caity Baser, nominated for the 2024 BRIT Rising Star Award, has brought out a new mixtape. ‘Still Learning’ features an array of styles and moods; “it’s got love, passion, hate, anger, confusion, jokes, chaos, nonsense: it’s all of me, in one place”. Songs to listen out for in this thirteen-track collection include: the sassy opener and fun video ‘I’m A Problem’ with its in-your-face lyrics: “I’m a problem/They wanna talk like me, talk shit like me and get in my jeans/I’m a problem/Call me the big daddy, ‘cause I’m so sexy, they wanna be like me”, a spicy reaction to hate comments Baser has received; the upbeat ‘The Plot’ with its infectious rhythm and insinuating bassline; the jazzy ‘Showgirl’ with its mellow instrumentation and Baser’s layered vocals, an upbeat pep-talk to a broken-hearted girlfriend; the dance track ‘Pretty Boys’, a jocular tirade against empty-headed suitors: ”Here we go again/How can someone look so pretty/But have nothing in their head?”; ‘Why Can’t I Have Two? (2468)’ with its playful jibe at double standards on gender; the catchy ‘X&Y’ with its funky drumbeat; the self-worth anthem ‘Choose Me’; and the closer, a testament to enduring friendship, dedicated to her fans, ‘I’ll be Here For You’. Irreverent, feisty, with a refreshing candour and engaging lyrics, ‘Still Learning’ is bound to expand an already burgeoning fanbase, ahead of Caity Blaser's UK-wide Spring tour.
